Class update from Friday 3rd October 2025:

The Year 1 children spent a wonderful day taking part in workshop about castles, knights and medieval life. It began with a session about the people who lived in a castle; they dressed up as different characters and learned about their importance within the castle. They then moved on to very lively session about medieval medicines. There were some shocking discoveries including the use of chickens, snakes and poo for curing the plague and infected skin! However, the children also discovered that some medicines from the past - honey, ginger and herbs - are still very much around today, for cooking and cold remedies. After this, the children (and adults) tested their problem-solving skills to construct wooden catapults. The finale of the day was taking part in a re-enactment of a medieval battle. Preparation included building a castle with walls strong enough to withstand a battering ram pushed by the children. They also enjoyed launching the catapults which they made earlier.

On Friday, the class learned about the coats of arms and the meaning of heraldic symbols. The children created a shield and chose a creature to be their ‘supporter’ and drew this carefully at each side of the shield. There were some very good dragons and wild boars!
