Year 5 embraced Arts Week last week with gusto! We started the week with a visit to the Stanley Picker Gallery in Kingston. We looked at 'A Journey Through Kingston’ by Ian Wornast and worked in a group to create a similar piece. The children made their own response book and were able to capture their thoughts and ideas about the other exhibits currently at The Stanley Picker Gallery. We then spent the afternoon on an historical tour of Kingston, with the children sketching in their art books to give them inspiration for their main project for Arts Week - stained glass windows. We concluded our afternoon at All Saints Church to look at examples of their windows noting the different shapes, colours and designs used.
With the theme of Arts Week being Kingston, we decided to base our stained glass window around the Kings and Queens of Kingston. The children then designed, made and decorated their own stained glass using laminates, tissue paper and a variety of pens. For homework last week, the children designed and made their own version of 'A Journey Through Kingston' thinking what is important to them about Kingston. Hopefully, you were able to see both pieces of work at the Open Evening this week.
We completed the week with a visit to our buddy class - Nursery. The children spent time together looking carefully at each other and then drawing their buddies.
Lastly, the children were hard at work tie-dying their costumes for the Wizard of Oz. They thought carefully about where to put the elastic bands to create the pattern they wanted. They are looking forward to showing you all the results next week on Wednesday and Friday evening!
What a fantastic creative week!
