Below is our most recent blog. This includes a summary of the last two weeks including any important information for the coming weeks (reminders etc).
It has been lovely to see how quickly the children have settled into life in Year 5 over the first few weeks of the term!
In English, we have started to read The Last Wild - an intriguing book about a virus that has wiped out all the animals. We have met the main character 'Kester James' and written a diary entry in role and a character description using powerful and precise vocabulary.
In geography, we have been learning about the four-point and eight-point compass and the children put their learning into practise in the playground by reading and following directions using a compass as a starting point. We have also been looking at Ordnance Survey maps of Hindleap Warren - learning about using a key and how to read and write 4 digit grid references.
In science, we have been learning about the particles in a solid, liquid and gas and which process can be used to change the state from solid to liquid etc. We acted like the particles would using all the hall space for a gas!
Place value has been the focus of our Maths learning so far this year. We have been looking at numbers up to 1,000,000 and partitioning into 1s/10s/100s/1000s etc. We have been using place value charts to help us and this was particularly helpful when adding 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s to specific numbers.
In PE, the children have started their Gymnastics sessions by developing vaulting skills and after practising for Sports Day, we have been focusing on jumping in our SportsHall Athletics lessons.
